Alain Gauthier: Evolutionary Co-Leadership
Alain Gauthier As an international consultant, facilitator, coach, author, and educator, Alain focuses his work on developing co-leadership and partnering capabilities in and across the public, private, and civil society sectors. He is passionate about integrating the inner and outer dimensions of co-leadership, both at the individual and collective levels, in the service of a new development paradigm. A graduate from H.E.C. (Paris), Stanford University M.B.A., and former senior consultant at McKinsey & Company, Gauthier has served for more than 40 years a wide range of clients across sectors on four continents. He has published six books on leadership development, and teaches a course on co-leadership coaching at Paris University II.
The presentation is intended for consultants, coaches, and other change agents from all sectors – particularly those who want to deepen their understanding of the “evolutionary call” and are experiencing the limits of focusing mainly on individual leadership development.
Alain will build on the key concepts and practices presented in his book Actualizing Evolutionary Co-leadership, emphasizing some integral practices that enable its embodiment.
After an opening story of what has led him to focus on evolutionary co-leadership, he will ask participants to reflect individually and then share in small groups their responses to the questions: What does “evolutionary” mean to you? What forms of “co-leadership” have you experienced personally? What examples of co-leadership come to mind in sports, the arts, emerging or learning organizations?
He will then frame current evolutionary patterns, polarities, and paradigm shifts, and ask participants: What is for you the role of leadership in this paradigm shift? What leadership qualities are most needed at this time? Can one individual embody them all effectively? What needs to shift in the interior domains to move from individual to co-leadership?
In conclusion, he will illustrate how personal, interpersonal and systemic practices complement each other to enter the three dances of inner partnering, outer partnering and evolutionary partnering and ask the question: which practice(s) might you start with or emphasize at this time?
