Ken Wilber on Integral Technology

We’re really, REALLY excited to bring you what will certainly be a memorable evening with Ken Wilber on the topic of Integral Technology, in conjunction with our friends at Consciousness Hacking.

Consciousness Hacking is a global community exploring technology as a catalyst for psychological, emotional and spiritual flourishing. It’s an inside-out perspective on how technology can serve us by changing our relationship to the world, rather than the world itself. The ultimate purpose of the group is to support the community of people exploring, building and disseminating new tools for the evolution of individual and collective flourishing.

A year ago Ken Wilber reached out to Consciousness Hacking with a deeply resonant assertion: Technology will play a critical role in the future of spirituality and we need to think deeply about its design and development. In a series of conversation, Ken opened up an entirely new design space for Transformative Technology that is critical for a complete model of human development.

For thousands of years, the great wisdom traditions relied on practices that required no more technology than a cushion to sit on, or in the case of modern psychology, the therapist’s couch. But in our lifetime alone we have seen an unprecedented explosion of technologies that offer new ways to access and explore consciousness. There is great promise, potential horrors, and many unknowns, which are the hallmarks of emergence.

It’s the kind of topic that Integral Theory can illuminate beautifully, and who better than Ken Wilber to articulate the challenges and possibilities!

In this evening event, Ken will share his perspective in a conversation with Consciousness Hacking founder Mikey Siegel and BAI’s Dustin DiPerna. Ken will be joining remotely from his home in Boulder, CO.

This is going to be a rich and edgy conversation on an important topic for our time. Don’t miss it!

Jun Po Roshi: Emotional Koans

junpo2_150x150

Jun Po Roshi received his Zen Masters recognition in 1992. He was Vice Abbot and head monk as well as resident yoga teacher at Dai Bosatsu Zendo Kong Ji in the Catskill Mountains in New York state from 1987 through 1993. His Inka Zen lineage is in the Rinzai tradition, through Eido Shimano Roshi of the The Zen Studies Society. His yoga lineage is that of BKS Iyengar and Patabi Jois. Jun Po has been practicing, studying and teaching Zen and Yoga for over twenty-five years.

Our first event of 2016 will be with esteemed Zen master, Jun Po Roshi, abbot of the Hollow Bones Order. Jun Po is beloved among many Integral practitioners for his unconventional approach to Zen practice. He has taught at a number of Integral events over the past years, and his two most recent books, including his biography, A Heart Blown Open, were co-written with a member of the integral community, Keith Martin-Smith.

Jun Po is also the main creator of the Mondo Zen™ approach practiced by Hollow Bones. Mondo Zen™ is based on Japanese and Chinese Zen, updated for the 21st Century. Mondo Zen™ transcends the hierarchical/authoritarian, gender-biased and constraining monastic aspects of traditional Zen in favor of practical, experiential “in the world” engagement. Relying only on direct personal experience—as taught by the Buddha himself—it does not allow mythic constructs to complicate its philosophical orientation. This includes ideas such as reincarnation, soul as personality, bardo realms, past lives, a creator deity, or other faith-based beliefs.

In this evening program, Jun Po Roshi will lead a group Mondo koan process. This will be a Zen dialog between Jun Po and two volunteers and is an opportunity to witness, participate and share an experience of insight leading to a interesting liberating shift in philosophical perspective. Shifting our perspective from ego-centric to more Buddha-centric. From that shifted perspective we will then engage in an emotional Koan investigation demonstrating a practice that can lead to emotional freedom and maturity.

Here is a wonderful little video about emotional koans. Notice how in this practice Jun Po Roshi connects anger with deep caring. Beautiful!

Please join us for an deeper dive into the practice of emotional koans. Through such practices we come to see through our ego and experience our true nature as Clear Deep Heart/Mind. We will then experience the fear, sadness/grief, and concern that underlie all of our habitual, negative emotional reactions. Once we change our understanding and realize this truth, we can transform negative emotional reactions into wise, compassionate responses and alleviate suffering.

To accomplish this, we need to change our philosophical understanding and experience genuine insight. Once we change our understanding and realize this truth, we will be able to recognize violence expressed as anger, shame, disconnection and other self-defeating patterns as confused immature emotional reactions masking our deeper feelings of fear, sadness and genuine concern. In this way, through the Mondo Zen koan practice, we can transform negative emotional reactions into wise, compassionate responses and alleviate suffering.

Our angst becomes our liberation.

“Mondo Zen training is one of the most important, creative, and novel additions to the meditation pantheon, highly recommended for the accelerated effect it has on spiritual growth and development. Definitely check it out!” — Ken Wilber

Steve McIntosh: The Presence of the Infinite

steve_mcintosh_150x150Steve McIntosh is a leader in the integral philosophy movement and author of the books: The Presence of the Infinite (Quest 2015), Evolution’s Purpose (Select Books 2012), and Integral Consciousness (Paragon House 2007). In addition to his work in spiritual philosophy, Steve is also co-founder and president of the integral political think tank, The Institute for Cultural Evolution, which focuses on the cultural roots of America’s challenges (culturalevolution.org). Prior to his involvement with the integral movement, he had a variety of other successful careers, including founding the consumer products company Now & Zen, practicing law with one of America’s largest firms, and working as an executive with Celestial Seasonings Tea Company. He is an honors graduate of the University of Virginia Law School and the University of Southern California Business School. For more on his work visit: stevemcintosh.com

Please join us on September 30 for an evening event with Steve McIntosh as he shares insights from his new book on spiritual experience.

The Presence of the Infinite: The Spiritual Experience of Beauty, Truth, and Goodness, represents a significant milestone in the emergence of evolutionary spirituality. Steve shows how a deeper understanding of the beautiful, the true, and the good provides a kind of “spiritual technology” that can be used for both personal spiritual growth, and as a powerful methodology for solving difficult social problems by fostering the evolution of consciousness.

The Presence of the Infinite focuses on our culture’s need for better spiritual leadership, and provides a timely cultural analysis and critique of the various forms of spirituality that are vying for influence in contemporary American society. Building on this context, Steve shows how evolutionary spirituality overcomes the limitations of religious, secular, and progressive spirituality by better harmonizing science and spirit.

Steve then uses evolutionary spirituality’s enlarged understanding of what spiritual experience is and how it works to consider the question of ultimate reality. This leads to an examination of conflicting ideas that regard spirit as either formless and non-dual, or as loving and creative. By working to harmonize and integrate these alternative conceptions of ultimate reality, Steve shows how evolutionary spirituality can achieve a synthesis of non-dual and theistic teachings of truth that can produce a spiritual renaissance in America and beyond.

Here’s what other integral luminaries are saying about the book:

“McIntosh has written another important and groundbreaking book.”

— John Mackey, Co-Founder and CEO of Whole Foods Markets

“McIntosh has become our leading voice telling the story of spirituality through … truth, beauty and goodness.”

— Tony Schwartz, bestselling author

“Your understanding of your own spirituality will be challenged and clarified …”

— Terry Patten, Co-author of Integral Life Practice

Don’t miss this exciting evening with one of the integral movement’s brightest stars.

Amir Ahmad Nasr: What Happened to the Arab Spring?

amir_ahmad_175x175

Amir Ahmad Nasr is the formerly anonymous provocative voice and Arab Spring activist behind the internationally acclaimed sociopolitical blog The Sudanese Thinker, infamously credited with helping to inspire the rise of the Sudanese digital activism scene. In 2013, at the age of 26, Amir made his authorial debut with his memoir My Isl@m: How Fundamentalism Stole My Mind – And Doubt Freed My Soul, which forced him to seek political asylum in Canada. As a result of his decade-long work at the intersection of culture, digital media, and current affairs, Amir has shared the stage with Nobel Peace Laureates, former presidents, and fellow entrepreneurs. He been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, The Guardian, Bloomberg, France24, Al Jazeera English, CBC, WNYC, and many more media outlets in over 12 languages across the globe. Amir is passionate about accelerating the prospects of reform in the Middle East, and the wider Muslim world, and believes that the application of integral tools and practices wields great potential in aiding this objective. His website is amirahmadnasr.com.

We’re very excited about our event with Amir Ahmad Nasr on September 8. We sponsored a talk by Amir four years ago (“The Dawn of an Integral Islam”), just before he published his searing memoir My Isl@m: How Fundamentalism Stole My Mind – And Doubt Freed My Soul. Amir’s book was widely praised but banned in several countries, which forced him to seek political asylum in Canada.

Amir is that rarest of souls — a young man who has already lived, and is living, the path of development of a truly Integral Islamic identity, one that has taken him from Khartoum to Qatar to Malaysia to Cyberspace to the Arab Spring and now Canada.

In this evening event, Amir will help us understand the multifaceted answer to the question: What Happened to the Arab Spring?

As the Wall Street Journal notes, “early in 2011, the Arab Spring went into bloom across the Middle East and North Africa, and, in the glorious early phase of the uprisings, [Amir’s] own little posse of sharp-tongued liberal bloggers turned out to be the revolutionary vanguard.”

It was an optimistic moment in history, in which we were treated to many inspiring news reports focused on young, educated, tech-savvy, and relatively progressive youth who rallied their fellow citizens during the early phases of the uprisings.

But over time and with more recent headlines, that all seems to have changed… or has it?

According to Amir, missing from the conversation so far has been the crucial discussion about the evolution of consciousness and spirituality among the Internet-connected youth of the Arab world. Despite the tragedies and his sober assessment, he still sees much to be optimistic about.

During the program, Amir will speak with heartfelt candidness and invite the audience to participate in immersive thought experiments and inquiries into some of the moral dilemmas confronting all of us as integrally-informed change-agents as we strive to raise consciousness and change our world.

Advance tickets are no longer available but there are plenty of tickets at the door!

For the last several years BAI has sponsored an awesome party in August, our annual Summer Soirée. This year we’re making it a bigger and better event by co-sponsoring it with Evolutionary Collective, whose founder and director, Patricia Albere, gave a presentation for us last month. There are many organizations whose interests overlap with the Integral community, so this is a great way to support each other in serving the aspirations we share.

BAI and the Evolutionary Collective share a deep commitment to the conscious evolution of humanity. We are collectively striving to promote the shared field of awakening to foster greater human capacity, and human and planetary evolution. There is much we can learn from each other, and we are excited about the synergy that can be created between many individuals in the joyous space of a summer party.

Like all of our parties, this year’s Summer Soirée will be a great way to celebrate accomplishments, share stories, connect with people whose work interests you, and rub shoulders with some of the brightest minds and biggest hearts in the Bay Area and beyond.

Expecting a bigger turnout this year, and wanting to be even more festive and celebratory, we’ve moved the party to Townie restaurant in Berkeley. The food will be great (as always), beer and wine is included (cash bar for mixed drinks), and awesome beats will be provided by LA’s renowned DJ Gumsoul. Be sure to bring your dancing shoes! (Don’t worry, we won’t let the music drown out the rich conversation we all crave!)

If you’re new to the Bay Area, don’t miss it! Our parties are just the greatest. And the best way to get connected to the larger Integral community. We hope you’ll join us!

terri_o_150x150

Terri O’Fallon is the founder of Pacific Integral, a developer of educational and social change technologies perhaps best know for its Generating Transformative Change program. As an educator for over 45 years, Terri has first hand experience with developmental levels from birth to death. Terri studied under Susanne Cook-Greuter, becoming a certified scorer of the SCTI MAP, and with Ken Wilber who provided coaching as she was making original contributions to integral
developmental theory, which are summarized in the StAGES model.

In mid-July, the braintrust of the global Integral community will descend on Sonoma State University for the 5th International Integral Theory Conference. Among the stars of that show will be Terri O’Fallon, a major contributor to Integral Theory, who has agreed to do a presentation for the BAI community.

Terri is an important original researcher into adult development. Her work has extended the research of Jane Loevinger and Susanne Cook-Greuter, mapping the furthest reaches of adult development. She has also integrated them with Ken Wilber’s state-stage models in a unique intuitive way. Her unique and groundbreaking synthesis is embodied in her StAGES model, which she’ll introduce to our community next month.

Terri is a co-founder of Pacific Integral, whose Generating Transformative Change program is the original and widely considered one of the best of all Integral training programs.

StAGES is a groundbreaking new theory and assessment methodology for human development that grew out of Terri’s decades of experience in education and years of research on development at Pacific Integral. This new model reveals important new understandings about how human beings grow throughout life and helps us each make sense of where we are in our development.

It uses quadrants, levels, lines, states and types in a scoring system, allowing us to get an integral developmental sense of where individuals are responding in the moment. Practically, it gives us a roadmap for our individual and collective, human potential.

The model has both personal and professional applications. In the practice of coaching, psychotherapy, spiritual guidance and other mentoring positions, the model is used to determine where the client is coming from developmentally in any particular moment as the client moves later and/or earlier on the scale. This allows the practitioner to be agile in their moment-to-moment application of protocols that fit the presenting level of development.

Individuals can also use this process personally, for self development, when we recognize we are responding (triggered) from shadow material. She identifies three key questions that can help us to determine…”what level is this response coming from? How do I work with myself when I am functioning at this particular level?”

Terri will teach us the theory (a 3rd-person process), lead us in (2nd-person) relational experiential exercises, and draw us into (1st-person) interior exercises to apply StAGES.

Our event with Terri is not just a chance to gather with our community. It is also an experiential learning experience, and a unique opportunity to learn about an original application of Integral principles that is already having a significant influence on developmental theory and its many applications.

Patricia Albere is the founder and director of the Evolutionary Collective and an internationally known contemporary spiritual teacher and author. Her work creates a powerful field of shared awareness that can, and is, moving humanity far beyond the limits of personal growth. She has worked with over 150,000 people in groups in the last 40 years. Her mastery as a transformative teacher grounds her innovation in the field of ‘inter-subjective awakening’ and post-personal development. Go to evolutionarycollective.com for more information about Patricia’s work.

Dear BAI friends,

We’re excited to present an evening program with Patricia Albere, an internationally known contemporary spiritual teacher and author, and the founder and director of the Evolutionary Collective.

Patricia is doing pioneering work in what she calls Mutual Awakening, a shared awakening of consciousness not only within individuals but more importantly within the space between them. She is at ground zero of an evolutionary stream of spiritual awakening in which we learn to go beyond solo practice, psychology and personal transformation into a new space in awakened consciousness, together. Her work is helping to transform our understanding of what is possible in relationship and culture.

In this evening program, Patricia will present the larger context of the “WEvolution;” and how it exists on the foundation of a new capacity that is emerging in consciousness: the ability to inhabit a shared field of consciousness and be orchestrated by something greater than personal agendas.

Patricia will then guide participants into Mutual Awakening Practice, giving direct access to this new possibility in relatedness. The program will combine discussion and experience, always with an emphasis on facilitating the actual experience of the principles. This presentation will unfold in a thoughtfully designed progression, exceptionally well-guided and contained, informed by Patricia’s 40 years of teaching experience.

Stephen Busby has a coaching and healing practice, travels widely and is based at the Findhorn Foundation Community in Scotland. He has trained with Thomas Hübl at the Academy of Inner Science in Germany and worked internationally for over 30 years to help people fulfill their life-potential. For more information on his work and his several events in the Bay Area, see www.stephenbusby.com.

We are excited to have Stephen Busby back for another evening of exploring consciousness development.

Stephen is a warm and gentle presence with a true gift for guiding people to higher levels of consciousness. His first event with us last year was beautiful and affecting, so we are delighted he can join us once again.

We are living in an extraordinary age where there is an immense acceleration in consciousness available to us individually and as a human collective. What is the call to higher consciousness, how do we listen and how much do we allow it to permeate through us, so that our different ways of knowing – our somatic senses, our subtle and psychic capacities, become ever more synchronized and integrated, as our ground in life?

We are being invited to awaken to, become present to—and embody—more of our whole selves. With sensitivity we can expand our access to the higher, subtle realms, becoming more creative and courageous in how we do this.

Through simple relational practices and inner work we can learn to claim and cultivate higher consciousness through our everyday lives. This impacts directly with healing effect upon our personal intimate and professional realities, inviting and nourishing radical change at deep-rooted systemic, ancestral and cultural levels. Thus we learn together to participate through inquiry and awareness in the human evolutionary journey, becoming ever-clearer channels for a higher frequency of life, co-creating a new world.

Stephen will also be facilitating a 4-day Intensive Training May 14-17, 2015. He’ll be exploring the inner capacities that enable us to tap more directly into our complete individual and collective potential. The program will use small and large group exercises, dialogue and presentations, systemic constellational process and guided inner work. No previous experience is required and everyone is welcome, while those who do have experience will find the training a powerful aid to further development. Click here for more information.

We are happy to once again have the honor of sponsoring one of the founders of modern conscious evolutionary thinking and action, Barbara Marx Hubbard.

In this evening program, Barbara will explore the key themes of her newly revised book, Conscious Evolution, Awakening the Power of Our Social Potential. She will open a deep dialogue on the importance of conscious evolution as it might be compared to the origin of self reflective consciousness 50,000 years ago. The breakthrough here is that we are the first species on this Earth to be aware of our own evolution, aware that we are affecting it by everything that we do, and even more that we ARE evolution itself become self aware. As we gain power we  attribute to gods, we can destroy our world, but we can also evolve it into a future of unknown proportions.

What is our vision equal to our potential? What are steps both personal and social that we can take to move toward the emerging world? How can we develop social synergy to connect what is already working? How can we light the fire of love, of vocational arousal, of awakening creativity in ourselves and in evolving humans now proliferating everywhere on Earth? How indeed can our generation be the one to make conscious evolution into reality? Evolution by choice, not chance.

Barbara will explore the spiritual, social and scientific/technological aspects of conscious evolution with special emphasis on The New Story. The New Person. And the New Society.

BAI’s Terry Patten wrote the foreword to Barbara’s book and will engage her in dialog about their shared passion for an evolutionary approach to life. (Copies of Barbara’s book will also be available for purchase.) Barbara has been living this life for over 50 years, well before the Integral vision began to emerge. She is truly one of the giants on whose shoulders the Integral community stands. It’s definitely a must-see event!

Alain_200x200

Alain Gauthier As an international consultant, facilitator, coach, author, and educator, Alain focuses his work on developing co-leadership and partnering capabilities in and across the public, private, and civil society sectors. He is passionate about integrating the inner and outer dimensions of co-leadership, both at the individual and collective levels, in the service of a new development paradigm. A graduate from H.E.C. (Paris), Stanford University M.B.A., and former senior consultant at McKinsey & Company, Gauthier has served for more than 40 years a wide range of clients across sectors on four continents. He has published six books on leadership development, and teaches a course on co-leadership coaching at Paris University II.

The presentation is intended for consultants, coaches, and other change agents from all sectors – particularly those who want to deepen their understanding of the “evolutionary call” and are experiencing the limits of focusing mainly on individual leadership development.

Alain will build on the key concepts and practices presented in his book Actualizing Evolutionary Co-leadership, emphasizing some integral practices that enable its embodiment.

After an opening story of what has led him to focus on evolutionary co-leadership, he will ask participants to reflect individually and then share in small groups their responses to the questions: What does “evolutionary” mean to you? What forms of “co-leadership” have you experienced personally? What examples of co-leadership come to mind in sports, the arts, emerging or learning organizations?

He will then frame current evolutionary patterns, polarities, and paradigm shifts, and ask participants: What is for you the role of leadership in this paradigm shift? What leadership qualities are most needed at this time? Can one individual embody them all effectively? What needs to shift in the interior domains to move from individual to co-leadership?

In conclusion, he will illustrate how personal, interpersonal and systemic practices complement each other to enter the three dances of inner partnering, outer partnering and evolutionary partnering and ask the question: which practice(s) might you start with or emphasize at this time?

We’re happy to announce a special evening program with world-famous mystic and scholar, Andrew Harvey, and our very own Terry Patten.

Andrew and Terry will share their inter-linked visions of the radical evolutionary transformation that is possible and necessary in our remarkable historical moment, through talks, dialogue, and experiential processes.

They will open up one of the most profound narratives of transformation — that of death-and-rebirth, a fractal pattern so profound it is knit into the very fabric of all spiritual paths and narratives of awakening. Transformation can also be expressed as a hero’s journey, as an initiation into true human adulthood, and as a profound love affair with the Divine. But in death-and-rebirth we uniquely encounter the bardo, the gap, the unknown we most fear.

After Death and before Rebirth the soul must navigate underworld between. Here there is radical purification, the only way to a hope that is stronger than despair — the “Dark Night” process described by Christian mystics. Radical purification, or death, is the prelude to the Phoenix of divine consciousness and radiant embodiment rising from the ashes of the collective and personal “false self”. This is the bitter pill we fear to taste, but it is the elixir, the medicine for what truly ails us in this time.

Andrew Harvey will present his inner journey to Sacred Activism and his vision of Sacred Activism as the birthing-force of a new embodied divine humanity. Terry Patten will present his inner journey into Integral Activism, and his vision of Evolutionary Mutuality. If the next Buddha will be a Sangha, what does this mean for our relationships with one another now?

Andrew and Terry will also be hosting a four-day seminar, Radiant Embodiment: An Initiatory Journey, from March 5-8. If their work resonates with you, we encourage you to find out more and we’ve included some information below.

Radiant Embodiment: An Initiatory Journey
A 4-day Seminar with Andrew Harvey and Terry Patten
March 5-8, 2015, Berkeley

This seminar will begin by ritually convening a sacred community of practice. Then we will embark together on an initiatory journey inspired by the ancient mystery schools of India, Egypt, and Greece. In this wonderful, terrible, and critical historical moment, a profound opportunity is opening up — to encounter, embody and enact divine wisdom and love at a new and unprecedented depth. This is a new way of being and doing everything. It’s what we are calling the way of “radiant embodiment”. This retreat will be dedicated to an initiation process into that “new way” and its astounding possibilities and sacred responsibilities. It has three essential movements.

Bringing in the New Year!

A Special Greeting from Ken Wilber!

Ken recorded this brief (60 sec.) greeting to be played at the Holiday Party. It is Ken’s expression of appreciation for everything our community has done and his best wishes for the future.

Our annual holiday party will be in January this year, as we weren’t able to get a good space for December. But otherwise it will be the great Integral community celebration you’ve come to expect.

And community really is the focus. We always have great food, music and dancing, but the opportunity to connect and share with others who are doing integral in the world is what makes these celebrations so special. Not to mention lots of fun.

So mark your calendar and be sure to buy your tickets in advance to get the best price. We also have a couples rate so bring your partner, a date, or even a friend.

We hope to see you there!
