Amir Ahmad Nasr: What Happened to the Arab Spring?

Recorded Sept. 8, 2015

Amir is the formerly anonymous provocative voice and Arab Spring activist behind the internationally acclaimed sociopolitical blog The Sudanese Thinker, and the author of the searing memoir “My Isl@m: How Fundamentalism Stole My Mind – And Doubt Freed My Soul,” which forced him to seek political asylum in Canada. As the Wall Street Journal noted, “early in 2011, the Arab Spring went into bloom across the Middle East and North Africa, and, in the glorious early phase of the uprisings, [Amir’s] own little posse of sharp-tongued liberal bloggers turned out to be the revolutionary vanguard.

It was an optimistic moment in history, in which we were treated to many inspiring news reports focused on young, educated, tech-savvy, and relatively progressive youth who rallied their fellow citizens during the early phases of the uprisings. But over time and with more recent headlines, that all seems to have changed… or has it? According to Amir, missing from the conversation so far has been the crucial discussion about the evolution of consciousness and spirituality among the Internet-connected youth of the Arab world. Despite the tragedies and his sober assessment, he still sees much to be optimistic about. Amir is that rarest of souls — a young man who has already lived, and is living, the path of development of a truly Integral Islamic identity, one that has taken him from Khartoum to Qatar to Malaysia to Cyberspace to the Arab Spring and now Canada.

Andrew Harvey & Terry Patten: Death and Rebirth — The Transformation for Our Time

Recorded Mar. 4, 2015

Andrew and Terry shared their inter-linked visions of the radical evolutionary transformation that is possible and necessary in our remarkable historical moment, through talks, dialogue, and experiential processes. They opened up one of the most profound narratives of transformation — that of death-and-rebirth, a fractal pattern so profound it is knit into the very fabric of all spiritual paths and narratives of awakening. Transformation can also be expressed as a hero’s journey, as an initiation into true human adulthood, and as a profound love affair with the Divine. But in death-and-rebirth we uniquely encounter the bardo, the gap, the unknown we most fear. After Death and before Rebirth the soul must navigate underworld between. Here there is radical purification, the only way to a hope that is stronger than despair — the “Dark Night” process described by Christian mystics. Radical purification, or death, is the prelude to the Phoenix of divine consciousness and radiant embodiment rising from the ashes of the collective and personal false self”. This is the bitter pill we fear to taste, but it is the elixir, the medicine for what truly ails us in this time.
