A Technological Future of Human Flourishing: An Intimate Discussion with Dr. Aneel Chima

Thursday, November 30, 2017, 7:00 to 9:30pm, Berkeley

BAI is excited to host Dr. Aneel Chima of Stanford University for an evening of education and conversation, exploring leading-edge wisdom about designing technology with human flourishing in mind, Thursday, Nov. 30, 7-9:30PM.

Aneel is a wise, knowledgeable expert in the intersection of technological innovation and the social sciences. He is an engaging source for some of the most original, substantial and intriguing insights into how to design humanistic wisdom into the next generation of innovation in Silicon Valley. Technology degrades and supports human flourishing depending on how we define, design, and deploy it. Our current cultural moment demands the very best from us individually and collectively to help maximize its benefits and minimize its harms. In order to do so, we have to ask — In a world where tech is everywhere and where cultural rhythms are ever-accelerating, what is the future of human flourishing and, most importantly, how do we practice and propagate it? A common thread unifying the range of possible answers is, simply put, cultivating deep purpose and meaning. Finding purpose and making meaning is at the core of the human enterprise — it fuels motivation, builds resilience, gives focus and direction to our lives, and galvanizes communities into transformation. During this discussion, we will explore the intersection of purpose and human flourishing in the context of a “tech-everywhere” world. Because without deep purpose, there exists no foundation for individual or collective flourishing.

Aneel Chima, PhD. is the associate director of the Division of Health and Human Performance at the Stanford University School of Medicine where he co-founded and leads the Wellness Education Program (WellnessEd) and the Initiative on Flourishing Innovation (I-FLI). The questions animating his teaching, research, and social impact work are: What is the future of human flourishing in a hyper-complex, ever-accelerating cultural context where technology is ubiquitous? How do we practice flourishing authentically, propagate it effectively, and create vibrant, inclusive communities that ignite it?
